Kitchen Science: Easy Experiments for Pre-Teens

The Kitchen as a Laboratory

You don't need a school science lab to conduct genuinely fascinating experiments. The kitchen is already stocked with chemicals, catalysts, and physical systems waiting to be explored. For children aged nine to twelve, kitchen science provides something that classroom science sometimes cannot: the freedom to experiment without fear of getting it wrong.

Five Classic Kitchen Science Experiments

1. The Volcano (Acid-Base Reaction)

Materials: baking soda, white vinegar, food colouring, washing-up liquid

Mix baking soda and a drop of washing-up liquid in a cup. Add food colouring. Pour in vinegar and watch the reaction. The CO₂ produced by the acid-base reaction creates foam — the volcano effect. Ask your child: what happens if you add more baking soda? Less vinegar? Warmer vinegar?

2. Density Tower (Liquid Density)

Materials: honey, washing-up liquid, water, vegetable oil, rubbing alcohol

Carefully pour each liquid into a tall glass jar in order of density. Each layer floats on the one below. Drop small objects in and observe where they settle.

3. Invisible Ink (Chemistry)

Materials: lemon juice, white paper, cotton swab, lamp or iron

Write a message with lemon juice. Let dry. Hold near a heat source — the ascorbic acid oxidises and turns brown, revealing the message.

4. Non-Newtonian Fluid (Physics)

Materials: cornflour, water

Mix until it behaves like a solid when you hit it but a liquid when you hold it gently. This is oobleck — a non-Newtonian fluid that defies normal rules of liquids and solids.

5. Egg in a Bottle (Air Pressure)

Materials: hard-boiled egg (shelled), glass bottle with opening slightly smaller than the egg, lit match

Drop a lit match into the bottle, quickly place the egg on top. As the flame dies, air pressure drops inside and pushes the egg in. Adult supervision required.

Taking It Further

Encourage your pre-teen to document their experiments: what they expected, what happened, and why. This is the scientific method in action.
