Why Start Environmental Education So Young?

Young children between one and three are in a critical window for forming habits and values. Environmental love begins with small, sensory, hands-on experiences — not lectures.

Simple Green Activities for Toddlers

At Home

• Let your toddler water a small pot plant or herb garden — even one basil plant on the windowsill counts
• Sort household recycling together: "This one is glass, this one is paper — where does it go?"
• Compost fruit and vegetable scraps; show them how it turns into soil
• Choose reusable items over disposable: cloth napkins, reusable cups, beeswax wraps

Outdoors

• Collect litter on a short walk with a bag — make it a game, not a chore
• Visit a community garden or allotment to see food growing
• Watch bugs, worms, and birds and talk about why they matter
• Grow sunflower seeds from scratch — toddlers love watching something they planted grow taller than themselves

The Language of Caring

The words we use matter. Instead of saying "don't waste" or "that's bad for the planet", try positive framing: "Let's help the plants", "We share our toys so they don't get lonely". Children internalise values through stories, not scolding.
