The Sleep-Confident Toddler
1 min read
Why Toddler Sleep Is So Challenging
Between one and three years old, children are developing rapidly in every dimension — cognitively, physically, and emotionally. This very development is what makes sleep so complicated. A toddler who is learning to walk, talk, and assert their independence has a brain buzzing with new connections long after lights out. Sleep problems at this age are developmentally normal — and they are solvable.
How Much Sleep Does a Toddler Need?
- 12–18 months: 11–14 hours total (including one daytime nap)
- 18 months–3 years: 11–14 hours total (nap may continue or phase out)
Quality matters as much as quantity. Fragmented sleep — even if long in total — leaves toddlers overtired and more difficult to settle the following night.
Building a Sleep-Confident Routine
The Power of Consistency
Toddlers thrive on predictability. A consistent bedtime routine — bath, book, bed in the same sequence each night — signals the brain that sleep is coming. Aim for the same bedtime (within 30 minutes) seven days a week.
The Environment
- Cool room (16–20°C) — a temperature drop signals sleep to the body
- Blackout curtains — especially helpful in summer
- White noise — masks household sounds that trigger wakings
- A familiar comfort object — a soft toy or blanket provides security
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Screens in the 60 minutes before bed — blue light suppresses melatonin
- Overtiredness — an exhausted toddler is harder to settle, not easier
- Inconsistent responses to night wakings — pick an approach and stick to it
"There is no single 'right' way to help a toddler sleep — but there is always a consistent way, and consistency is everything."
When to Seek Help
If sleep difficulties are affecting the whole family's wellbeing, speak to your GP or health visitor. Sleep consultants can also offer personalised guidance. Remember: reaching out for support is a sign of good parenting, not failure.
